Discover Our New RBGE x Scotdec Botanical Learning Resources

New Third Level resources created by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) and Scotdec are now available to support interdisciplinary learning in Maths, Science and Global Citizenship.

Exploring Maths and Topical Science through Botanical Expeditions is a brand‑new set of classroom resources designed for Third Level Maths and Third Level Science/Biology, or as part of a wider interdisciplinary learning project.

Using the real-world context of historic and contemporary botanical expeditions, pupils are invited to think critically about how people study the natural world – and how mathematical thinking helps us understand it. Through videos, interactive tasks and investigation activities, learners explore speed, distance and time through the journeys of plant collectors whose work contributes to RBGE’s world‑renowned Herbarium collection of over 3 million pressed plant specimens.

Alongside mathematical problem‑solving, the resources support learners to take a Global Citizenship approach to Topical Science, encouraging them to consider the ethical, environmental and cultural dimensions of plant-collecting across time and place.

These resources have been co‑created by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Scotdec, and were made possible with support from the Maths Week Scotland Large Grants Fund and The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
