From Live Lesson to Sector Learning: Scotdec and RBGE Share Global Citizenship Approaches to Colonial Collections

Scotdec has been invited to co‑host a national online session with Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) for Museums Galleries Scotland, sharing learning from a hugely successful collaboration with schools.

The event builds on a Maths Week Scotland‑funded live lesson delivered by Scotdec and RBGE last year, which engaged over 1,600 pupils across Scotland with colonial plant collections through maths, global citizenship and decolonisation. The session demonstrated how applying a Global Citizenship Education (GCE) approach can help young people critically explore power, history and global connections within museum collections.

Following its success, Scotdec and RBGE have been asked to share their approach with museum and gallery practitioners across Scotland, focusing on practical ways to frame collections to engage audiences meaningfully.

As part of the funding, Scotdec and RBGE also co‑created a free online learning resource, exploring maths and topical science, plant collecting and global citizenship, which is now available on RBGE’s PropaGate learning platform.
