Probationer Teachers Show Strong Growth in Global Citizenship Confidence (2024-25)

We’ve now completed another full year of Global Citizenship sessions with probationer teachers across the South East of Scotland, and we’re really pleased to share just how positive the impact has been. The evaluation data for 2024–25 shows a clear message: early‑career teachers value this learning, and it is shaping their practice in meaningful ways.

Across the South East:

  • 98% of probationers rated our sessions Good or Excellent
  • 97% said their professional understanding of Global Citizenship had deepened
  • 92% felt more confident to bring global learning into their teaching
  • 94% told us they found the sessions directly useful for developing their practice

In Falkirk, every single probationer rated the programme positively.

What we actually do with probationers

As part of the Scottish Government’s Global Citizenship in Scotland (GCiS) programme, we work alongside Highland One World and WOSDEC to design and deliver the Global Citizenship strand of probationer professional learning to every local authority in Scotland.

Our Scotdec sessions include:

  • a grounding in what Global Citizenship Education means in practice
  • frameworks and tools for exploring global issues with care
  • participatory pedagogy (we do the activities, not just talk about them!)
  • examples linked directly to probationers’ subjects, stages and school contexts
  • optional bespoke sessions shaped around local priorities like anti‑racist education

What probationers tell us, year after year, is that these sessions help them feel more confident to talk about real‑world issues, more aware of their role in shaping inclusive classrooms, and more able to support young people to think critically about the world around them.

One strand of something much bigger

Although this story focuses on the probationer impact, it’s only one part of what GCiS offers. Alongside probationer training, Scotdec also delivers:

  • whole‑school CLPL and INSET days
  • cluster‑level development sessions
  • a national GCiS online course suite open to teachers from every local authority
  • bespoke packages shaped around local authority priorities

As the demand for practical, meaningful Global Citizenship training grows, we’re keen to work with additional local authorities who want to support their educators in this area. We can design tailored programmes that align with local priorities around anti‑racism, LfS, rights‑based learning, community engagement and more.

If you’re part of a local authority looking to strengthen Global Citizenship, anti‑racist education or Learning for Sustainability, we’d be happy to chat about how we can support you.
