Publication Announcement: Scotdec Co‑Authors Peer‑Reviewed Anti‑Racist Literacy Research

New peer‑reviewed research on anti‑racist English and literacy education, co‑authored by Charlotte Dwyer, Scotdec’s Director, and Jen Buchan, our Global Learning Lead, alongside Dr Navan Govender (University of Strathclyde) and Titilayo Farukuoye, writer and anti‑racist educator, is now available to access.

The ‘Grammars’ of Power and Racialisation: Supporting the Co-Design of an Antiracist English and Literacy Education Through Critical Alliances is now published in UKLA’s international academic journal Literacy.  This is an official journal of the UKLA, published three times a year and received by all members of UKLA. Its readership comprises researchers, teachers, teacher educators, literacy consultants, practitioners, inspectors, librarians and both undergraduate and graduate students.

and examines how anti‑racist approaches to English and literacy can be embedded meaningfully in classroom practice, moving beyond tokenistic inclusion to address power, language, representation and voice. The research draws directly on Scotdec’s practice‑based work with teachers and young people across Scotland.

This research formed the foundation of the Anti‑Racist Literacy Framework and accompanying English and Literacy classroom resources. The publication demonstrates that the expertise behind these materials is not only grounded in classroom experience, but also rigorous enough to contribute to the academic evidence base shaping anti‑racist education.

By co‑authoring peer‑reviewed research while leading national resource development, Scotdec continues to bridge research, policy and practice in Global Citizenship Education, ensuring that educators are supported by work that is both scholarly credible and classroom‑ready.
