Recap of the Scotdec Teacher Networking Event 2023

The annual Scotdec Teacher Networking Event held this Monday proved to be a brilliant opportunity for teachers from the south-east of Scotland – from local Edinburgh schools to those from further afield in Clackmannanshire and Falkirk – to connect, collaborate, and equip themselves with valuable resources for the upcoming term.

We brought together a diverse array of teachers who share a common goal: to provide learning experiences linked to global issues that young people care about.

Among the organisations in attendance were the Scottish Parliament Education Service, Dynamic Earth, Scottish Book Trust, and Scotland Malawi Partnership. Each organisation showcased a suite of resources that not only aligned with the curriculum but also brought real-world perspectives into the classroom.

The Scottish Parliament Education Service enlightened teachers on civic engagement and the political process, while Dynamic Earth offered exciting materials on earth sciences and environmental awareness.

The Scottish Book Trust shared materials that could kindle a love for reading and storytelling among learners, all while linking to the Scottish curriculum. Scotland Malawi Partnership, on the other hand, demonstrated how global connections could be fostered through various collaborative projects.

The event was an opportunity for teachers to learn about potential avenues for their schools or classes to collaborate with these organisations. These partnerships can add real-world context to learning, inspiring students and making education more engaging and meaningful.

Networking events like these go beyond resources. They nurture a sense of community among teachers, reminding them that they are not alone on their journey! The event fostered conversations, idea-sharing, and the potential for future collaborations among teachers themselves.

As teachers return to their classrooms armed with resources and connections, we’re receiving an education that extends beyond textbooks and embraces the world at large.
