Home learning activities

Our global learning at home activities are designed to be used by primary aged pupils to encourage learning around Global Citizenship themes. They are easy to use and provide children with the stimulus to talk about the world around them.

A small group of teachers are working with us to develop these materials and we will be posting more each week. If you’re a teacher with some great ideas for home learning activities please email kate@scotdec.org.uk to work with us.

All the resources are available below in a range of formats – choose one that works for you.  Learners can complete and return activities digitally on Glow, Google Classrooms or Seesaw. It’s also just as easy to fully participate with a pen and paper!

Haiti Tablo A

This is a wonderful short animated film aimed aged at children aged 8+.  It was made in Haiti and has subtitles. The activity is designed to encourage thinking about children’s rights locally and globally.

Print out the template and ask them to fill it in after they have watched the film.  If you don’t have a printer just get them to copy the three questions and jot the answers down.

Island Activity

You’re stranded on a desert island and you can bring anything you want – what would you choose? Get young people thinking about rights through this two-part learning activity.

Daily Walk

As you get in your daily exercise, why not try out this fun learning activity on the way? Explore and find new and different things on each walk – all you need is  a camera!

Inventing the Future

If you could invent anything to make a difference to people’s lives, what would it be? In this short activity, young people can design or build an invention to help people during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Newsround Grid

During lockdown, Newsround has become essential viewing for young people (and adults!) all over Scotland. This simple learning grid allows you to tackle a different aspect of a news story each day and take a closer look behind the headlines!

Superhero Planet

Be a superhero for our planet! This learning grid was co-created with Steph Brown at Williamston Primary School and is jam-packed with simple ways you can make a difference to our world – from recycling to collecting junk to getting creative without electricity!

Our School

This activity is designed to get pupils thinking about how good their school is at making people feel included. Instead of using people’s names, the activity encourages thinking around behaviours or activities that help people feel included or excluded.

Me and My Potato

This activity is about diversity and celebrating similarities and differences between people. It is designed for pupils to recognise that whilst we have many differences, we also share basic similarities.

What Do I Need To Be Happy

This activity will get pupils thinking about what they really need to be happy. Young people will be able to contribute to a discussion of the difference between their needs and wants of those of others around them.

Three Values

What values are important to you? This activity will encourage young people to recognise that everyone is unique and to identify similarities and differences.

Three Questions

What is good about us all being different? This activity will encourage young people to recognise that each individual has a unique blend of abilities and needs. Each person contributes to making the school community one which values individuals equally and is a welcoming place for all.

Newsround Activity

We know many of you are still using Newsround, daily editions as well as its web page. We have created a simple resource, one for Primary 2 – 4 and another for Primary 5 – 7, for you to use which may help spark critical thinking in your learners!

You can use the activity in a variety of ways: from a planning tool for future topics to discover what issues are your pupils really interested in, to supporting health and wellbeing.
