We recently spent the day working with Police Scotland’s equality and diversity teams and trainee Special Constables (SPCs), sharing insights from our work in schools and the challenges teachers face when supporting young people to understand and respond to racism and hate crime.
The session offered space to explore how Global Citizenship and anti‑racist education approaches can strengthen community relationships, build understanding, and support more effective engagement with children and young people.
It was encouraging to hear that all Police Scotland officers and support staff, regardless of rank, now participate in a full day of anti‑racist training as part of their professional development. Their commitment to improving engagement with Scotland’s diverse communities aligns strongly with the values we promote through Global Citizenship Education.
This work builds on our earlier involvement in international conversations about policing, education and community trust, including our contribution to cross‑sector guidance on anti‑racist practice published in 2021. Continuing these conversations with new cohorts of officers helps ensure that the perspectives of educators and young people remain part of Scotland’s wider approach to tackling racism.
We look forward to building on this work and supporting further cross‑sector collaboration that strengthens equality, inclusion and justice across Scotland’s communities.
