We’re delighted to share the launch of a new set of free, high‑quality teaching resources to support the revised SQA Migration and Empire History module. Developed by the University of Stirling in collaboration with History teachers across Scotland, and supported by the Scottish Government, the resource pack responds directly to the updated requirement for learners to explore not only the contribution of Scots abroad – but also the impact of Scottish settlement on Indigenous peoples, cultures and lands.
The pack includes 15 ready‑to‑use lessons examining the effects of Scottish migration in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, offering teachers structured, evidence‑based approaches to teaching empire through a more critical and globally‑aware lens.
As the professional learning partner on the project, Scotdec designed and delivered the CLPL to accompany the resources, helping teachers build confidence in navigating complex histories and supporting them to introduce decolonial perspectives in their classrooms. Our sessions explored the thinking behind the materials, provided practical guidance for implementation, and offered tailored local examples to help educators connect these global stories to Scotland’s own communities and contexts.
These new resources aim to support meaningful, nuanced and globally‑informed history teaching, ensuring young people can critically engage with Scotland’s role in empire and its legacies today.
